Computational Realism
Computational Realism, from 25 FEB to 6 MAR, addresses the conversation between the computer and the artist with twelve international artists using Artificial Intelligence and Generative Adversarial Networks creating works in ongoing conversations with the machine.
Sunset Piano is an abstract composition that conveys the feeling of the moment when the sun dips below the horizon. It started out as a video taken at sunset over the East River in New York City. I then used both off-the-shelf and custom plugins for Adobe Photoshop and After Effects to isolate the key colors and motions. The title 'Sunset Piano' was inspired by the resulting shifting tones and shapes that resembled a visual instrument. This piece is part of my ongoing examination of technology’s effects on our modern environment.

Exploring what is the role of creativity in a world of infinite amount of AI generated content and the importance of human narrative, expertise, and vision. Created by fusing multiple computational and AI processes as well as digitally painting/collaging by hand - creating a hybrid of creative mediums. Visually the artwork could be divided into 4 main sections - exploring the concept of progression and evolution: The lowest part represents roots, tradition and history; 2nd section signifies nature, organic forms and flow; section 3 shows our mix-reality condition – the blending of physical and digital; and section 4 is the virtual dimension, symbolizing AI, blockchain, 3D and the data layers of our digital world. Highlighting through art what it means to be human, in this important moment of cultural and technological transformation.

VIEW & COLLECTMamelles is a small strip of beach flanked by a rocky hill, which used to be a volcano thousands of years ago. To access it, you must climb down the main road on foot. It’s a short hike that culminates in a small corridor through the rock formations of the hill, and the view is outstanding. About 100 meters of clear blue-green water generously shaded by the hill where a lighthouse sits. This place used to be my refuge while I was pregnant. Swimming in its deep waters and letting go of the weight of my body.
A couple of months ago, Mamelles beach was closed to the public permanently. As the city rapidly develops, more and more parks and beaches are closed to the public. The city feels hotter, more crowded, and tenser as these last connections to nature disappear.
Oceanic Takedown is a dystopian scenario where the ocean continues its advance until a city in flux is taken over, its march towards progress made insignificant by a vast and powerful force.

Watching people in this way can be as fascinating as looking out of the window of a moving train, capturing the mundanity of everyday life, as well as highlighting the uniqueness of each anonymous individual.
This experimental animation is crafted using a custom multilayered generative system that reacts to visual stimuli, such as, in this instance, videos captured whilst waiting for a train in a french train station.

This artwork reflects the thinness of the veil between the human/spirit experience and an artificial intelligence experience. I want to explore how it feels to the viewer when I add layers of AI generated art, is there still softness and emotion coming through. When I made a physical felt artwork I add layer after layer of wool, building up to get the right colours and movement in the piece. I have followed this method with this piece, adapting my physical process become a digital one. We talk about AI art being soulless but I aim to investigate how we can add soul to art using AI. Careful viewing of this artwork will reveal spirits dancing and soft textures forming in those layers.

'Ensemble' employs AI image outputs generated by a custom model trained on my existing artworks. The outputs have been added to my existing workflow resulting in a work that reflects my established aesthetic. This AI-enabled approach represents a shift in the digital painting process I have developed.
I make paintings that challenge traditional notions of what constitutes painting; and ask how we might think about paintings in the age of handheld screens and the internet. It has been my intention to disrupt the obvious cultural redundancies of paint, while replacing them with new possibilities. I am both questioning and committed to paint as a relevant medium. It feels important in the emerging context of AI and our increasingly digital life to highlight its continued legacy of emotionally manipulative and subjective power.
In machine learning, ‘ensemble' refers to a technique that combines multiple models to improve predictive accuracy. However, "ensemble" can also refer to a group of musicians, dancers, or performers who work together to create a unified performance.
‘Ensemble’ is the first artwork to be minted as an NFT by Matthew Stone that utilises AI image generation as part of its creative process.

This is the first piece from a new branch in a long on-going series of works, oscillating around (if you pardon the pun) the theme of "Waves" - from ocean waves, to sound waves, to quantum field waves, to social & political waves, ... and now to waves in the crust of the Earth, slow motion waves on geological timescales, mountains. The work was created using a number of different AI (Artificial Intelligence) techniques.
Personal note (note from Borya: don't add in catalogue!) In a tragic foreshadowing, I made this work before the devastating earthquake on February 6th 2023 in Turkey, my home country, and Syria. 100% of all of my primary sales will be donated to rescue and care efforts.
