THE FIRST 500 DAYS - Day 4

NFT: Limited Edition

Twitter // Instagram

art by Addie Wagenknecht

In Everynights: THE FIRST 500 DAYS Wagenkencht attempts to create an aesthetic whole. Organized in loose chronological order from day 1 to 500, Wagnknecht reveals abstract, fantastical and conceptual forms of structure and abstraction in the collection. Each work was created while Wagenknecht was falling asleep with her hand on her phone or holding her pen to tablet. In this transit state the artist works with the unpredictability of the creative output and the unknown. The work represents a departure from traditional artistic techniques of intentional application of a brush and serves as a creative conceptual study of the pervasive belief that we must optimize every aspect of our lives into something that can be commodified, including sleep and rest.

Suma

NFT: Limited Edition

art by Aleksandra Jovanic

I'm sure you know what Suma is about. You could say it in English sum, and then it's an elementary arithmetical problem, the total amount of something that exists. Suma system is divided in two equal parts, displayed side by side. Symbolic surface areas are given the exact same quantity of resources, just look at the numbers. But they don't appear to be alike or identical. Differing points of advantage or disadvantage are highlighted by structural glowing barrier. Constant challenging movements are fixing the system, striving to achieve equilibrium. “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.” ― James Baldwin

Thirst Trap Glitch

NFT: Limited Edition

Twitter // Instagram

art by Gretchen Andrew

What appears to us as a glitch, Google interprets as complete truth. Gretchen’s NFT GLITCH GIFs are technical vectors for the artist’s hacks of Google and other Big Tech algorithms. As files, they carry the necessary metadata to infiltrate Google’s artificial intelligence. When you Google “contemporary art auction record” Gretchen’s Vision Boards appear as top search results in part because she has deployed these Glitch Gifs across the internet. Knowing that Google registers only the first frame of a GIF, the first of the 255 frames imagines Gretchen’s Vision Boards selling for a contemporary art auction record at Sotheby’s Auction House. This single frame is all Google acknowledges, while the remainder of the 254 frames present the viewer with, well, an absurd Thirst Trap. Thirst Traps, like Gretchen’s Glitch GIFs, are about thinly disguised misdirection. The GQ defines a Thirst Trap as "the act of disingenuously posting sexy photos-while suggesting the subject of the photo is something else entirely.” Adopting the Thirst Trap form, Gretchen uses technical means to convert sexual attention into algorithmic infiltration. As with Selfie Feminism and Glitch Feminism, Thirst Trap Glitch GIFs are also a form of reappropriating sexuality and deploying it when, where, and how the artist sees fit.

Yesterday I was falling, today I fell further. Future oblivion and halcyon days sit at Horizon’s table, feasting together, conspiratorial bedfellows. Falling is my labyrinth, endless possibilities half-lives half-turns. But as Icarus we continue - to the stars through difficulties.

Oceanic Takedown

NFT: Limited Edition

Twitter // Instagram

Mamelles is a small strip of beach flanked by a rocky hill, which used to be a volcano thousands of years ago. To access it, you must climb down the main road on foot. It’s a short hike that culminates in a small corridor through the rock formations of the hill, and the view is outstanding. About 100 meters of clear blue-green water generously shaded by the hill where a lighthouse sits. This place used to be my refuge while I was pregnant. Swimming in its deep waters and letting go of the weight of my body.

A couple of months ago, Mamelles beach was closed to the public permanently. As the city rapidly develops, more and more parks and beaches are closed to the public. The city feels hotter, more crowded, and tenser as these last connections to nature disappear.

Oceanic Takedown is a dystopian scenario where the ocean continues its advance until a city in flux is taken over, its march towards progress made insignificant by a vast and powerful force.

Paths That Join

NFT: Limited Edition

Twitter // Instagram

There is an invisible grid. Points are selected at random, serving as anchors, joints to a whole. Like the five pointed star that you could draw with a stroke of a pen without lifting the nib, the selected points are connected and their order is also random. An arc or a straight path connect any two points. The paths they make pulsate, spreading color into the surrounding pixels. Their arrangements criss-cross or, in other iterations, evoke glyphs and abstract park plans. Their directions are both circular and angular. They are paths that join.
